A man who appeared in Naas District Court offered to pay €300 as a sum of remorse after his dog bit someone.

The case was heard in the court on Thursday, March 14 last, before Judge Desmond Zaidan.

The judge was told that on the date of the incident, the man's dog, which was said to be a 'small-breed' dog, got loose from the family home.

The dog then ran across into a neighbour's garden and proceeded to bite a person (who was visiting the neighbour's home) on the leg.

Gardaí said that the man has no previous convictions.

It was heard that the dog still remains with the man and his family.

Commenting on the case, Judge Zaidan jokingly said to the defendant: "Your dog packs a punch... It’s always the smallest dogs that bark the loudest!"

Defending barrister Mark Gibbons said that his client wished to offer €300 as a gesture of remorse towards the injured party.

Judge Zaidan agreed to this request, and also directed that if the injured party does not wish to accept the money, then the money will be given to an animal welfare charity.

The judge told the man that once this sum of money is handed over, he would apply the Probation Act on the man's case.
