There are not enough bus stops or bus shelters in County Kildare.

A Kildare County Council meeting was told that €500,000 is being provided by the National Transport Authority to upgrade bus stops and this includes the installation of bus poles and hardstanding areas as well as bus shelters.

KCC official Celina Barrett said  it is expected that a programme of bus stop locations and

associated works will be agreed with the NTA before work gets underway. Improvements at key town centre stops can be included in the programme.

Ms Barrett also said that there is a huge demand for stops and shelters and the money to be provided won’t meet the demand.

She also said the council must use designs provided by the NTA.

Proper shelters are needed for when “buses decide not to turn up” said Cllr Chris Pender, a frequent user of public transport.

Some bus stops in the Naas are were described as a “lump of mud “ by Cllr Bill Clear, who also said the needs of people with a disability are not being adequately addressed.
