Local Property Tax nominations for Kildare-Newbridge MD heard at final meeting before Local Elections 2024

The Local Property Tax (LPT) nominations for the last term of the most recent Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) were discussed among local councillors.

The nominations were heard at the meeting, which took place at the headquarters of Kildare County Council (KCC) on Wednesday, May 15 last.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Anne Connolly nominated for €5,140 to go towards the MD’s Roads Office, and this was seconded by her party colleague Cllr Rob Power.

Cllr Power himself made a number of nominations at the meeting: he nominated for €1,000 to go towards the Newbridge Family Resource Centre, and this was seconded by FG Cllr Kevin Duffy; Caragh Tidy Towns €6,500 for the provision of a biodiversity mural and Larry Stanley Commemoration at Caragh Parish Field; €5,000 to the Parks and Recreation section of KCC, to facilitate the provision of a community walking track as part of Kilcullen GAA club redevelopment; €5,000 for KCC’s

Accessibility Section to go towards accessibility improvements at Newbridge Town AFC; €25,000 to go towards the deliver a Town Report through the multi-agency Newbridge Forum (According to Cllr Power, this report would identify key supports required in the town and provide a strong evidence base for future projects or funding applications).

FURTHER NOMINATIONS

Cllr Power also nominated for: €5,000 to KCC’s community section, for the provision of an outdoor fire escape allowing the first floor to become a space for community events; €2,000 to Kildare Sports Partnership for an outreach programme with Halverstown cricket club or cricket clubs in the MD; and lastly, €2,500 to the Heritage Section / Officer off KCC, for the provision of a grant to Raheens GAA, to support a community engagement and history project around the club’s 100th Anniversary.

Fine Gael Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer nominated to allocate €1,000 to Newbridge Lyons Club, but KCC did not allow this, claiming that nominating to this group 'was not within the remits' of KCC, as it is an independent charity.

Cllr O’Dwyer questioned this decision made by KCC.

However, Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer was successful in her nomination of €9,600 to the MD’s Roads Office.

FF Cllr Suzanne Doyle nominated for €6,000 to go towards Kildare Chamber of Commerce, which was seconded by Cllr Duffy.

LIGHTING

Cllr Duffy nominated for €12,000 to go towards public lights at the Canal Harbour, and this was seconded by his party colleague Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.

Mayor of the MD, Fine Gael Cllr Paddy Curran, nominated for €1,500 to go towards the Bishopsland Residents Asssociation in Kildare town.

This was seconded by Cllr Doyle.

Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer nominated for €2,500 to Cross and Passion College (CPC), for the cutting back of trees along the path between the Kare entrance and CPC entrance to activate the proposed woodland landscape plan included in the School extension.

She also proposed for €10,500 to go towards the installation of a pedestrian crossing in the vicinity of Kilcullen Family Practice and to upgrade the existing disabled bays to ensure they are fit for purpose for and safe particularly for wheelchair users.

Independent Cllr Fiona McLoughlin-Healy nominated for €5,000 to go towards the Kildare Sports Partnership; specifically, to the provision of the aforementioned community walking track.

Her motion was seconded by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.

In addition, FF Cllr Noel Heavey nominated for any contingency LPT funds to go towards the same project.

Cllr Heavey also nominated for €1,540 to go towards the Community Section of KCC.


UNALLOCATED LPT FUNDS

Cllr Duffy nominated for any unallocated LPT funds from 2019 to 2024 to be allocated to the MD’s Roads Office.

This was seconded by Cllr Doyle.

Lastly, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer nominated for any LPT funds not drawn down, going back as far as 2013, be allocated to the Area Engineers Department.

This nomination was seconded by Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer.
