Margaret and Dermot Nee, winners of the President’s Cup, with Derna Wallace, president of the South Midland Region of Bridge Clubs
Derna Wallace, the President of the South Midland Region of Bridge Clubs, celebrated the culmination of her presidency with the highly anticipated President's Cup event, held on May 12 at Kilcullen Bridge Club.
This event marked the grand finale of her tenure, bringing together players from across the region for a day of competitive bridge.
The South Midland Region of Bridge Clubs encompasses all affiliated clubs in South Kildare, Carlow, Kilkenny, and Laois.
The President's Cup, initially established in 2021 by former President Colette O'Neill, was revived this year under the leadership of Newbridge native Derna Wallace.
Drawing 26 pairs of participants, the event was a testament to the growing popularity of bridge in the region, with Damien and Margaret Nee emerging as the victors.
Reflecting on the success of the President's Cup, Derna Wallace expressed her delight at the turnout and interest generated by the event. “I am thrilled with the response to the President's Cup. It was wonderful to see so many players come together for a day of spirited competition,” said Derna.
“Throughout my presidency, my aim has been to promote bridge and expand its reach to new audiences.
“Bridge is a game for everyone, and I have been particularly focused on introducing it to new and young players.”
As part of her efforts to encourage newcomers to the game, Derna has been actively involved in teaching bridge to transition year students and organising separate competitions for novices, both of which have been met with enthusiasm.
Additionally, she spearheaded a beginners' group at The Royal Curragh Golf Club, with 12 members now poised to join local bridge clubs thanks to the mentorship provided.
Looking back on her tenure, she expressed gratitude for the warm reception she received from players across Ireland and highlighted the invaluable learning experiences gained from visiting various clubs and participating in congresses throughout the country.
“I've been fortunate to engage with bridge enthusiasts from all over Ireland and have been deeply touched by the camaraderie and hospitality extended to me,” she remarked.
As Derna Wallace's presidency draws to a close, the legacy of her efforts to promote the game of bridge and foster a vibrant bridge community in the South Midland Region will undoubtedly endure, leaving a lasting impact on enthusiasts of the game.
