The Mayor of legendary singer Bruce Springsteen’s hometown has said that the singer 'is very excited' to see Rathangan twinned with Freehold, New Jersey in America.

The Leinster Leader previously reported back in March that Rathangan signed a historic twinning agreement with Bruce Springsteen’s hometown.

The 'Born in the USA' and 'Dancing in the Dark' singer’s great-great-grandmother, Ann Garrity (on his father’s side), came to Freehold from Rathangan in 1852.

On Wednesday, May 15 last, Mayor Kevin Kane made a visit to Áras Chill Dara and appeared at the end of the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) meeting.

He was officially welcomed to the meeting by the Mayor of the MD, Fine Gael Cllr Paddy Curran.

Commenting on the twinning, Mayor Kane jokingly said: "I’d like to apologise to everyone who thought that Bruce would be coming here today... he’s a little busy!"

He continued: "Bruce is very excited to see the two towns twin together."

"We look forward to the opportunity of making a friendship (with the people of Rathangan) over the coming years."

Mayor Kane further said that a museum dedicated to the popular singer is being planned back in Freehold.

He concluded: "Thank you all very much for the delegation."

Fianna Fáil Cllr Suzanne Doyle also took a moment to tell Mayor Kane of how she got the chance to meet Bruce Springsteen back when he visited Rathangan in March.

She added: "They say 'don’t meet your heroes', but he is a genuinely lovely, lovely person."

Fine Gael Cllr Kevin Duffy also jokingly asked Mayor Kane if he had brought any tickets to Bruce Springsteen’s Croke Park concert!
