Kildare local elections: How they line out

Sorting of ballots continues at the Curragh Racecourse

As the sorting of the local and European election ballots continues here at the Curragh Racecourse, the tally volunteers are monitoring the papers.

So, in terms of parties and non party candidates, what is the state of play. 

There are 90 candidates running for election across eight local electoral areas - Athy, Kildare, Newbridge, Leixlip, Celbridge, Maynooth, Clane and Naas.

Fine Gael are running 15 candidates, with Fianna Fail fielding 14, Sinn Fein 14, Labour 8, Social Democrats 8, Green Party 7, Independent Ireland 5, Irish Freedom Party 1, Irish People 1 and Aontú 2. There are 15 independent candidates.
