Fine Gael dominates the Kildare council elections

Conference on voting rights for Irish diaspora to take place in Dundalk

Fine Gael is the dominant party on the new Kildare County Council with ten seats won.

Fianna Fáil is next in line with eight seats in the bag.

The Social Democrats have six councillors and Labour have five. There are three independent councillors elected so far.

A recount in the Kildare LEA is underway after Kildare town's Paddy Curran lost out to Pat Balfe.

Recounts generally turn out to be a waste of time in terms of changing a result.
