Count officials are predicting a first count result will be not be announced until at least this evening, with word spreading that it could possibly be Tuesday before any results are made public.
Tallies are predicting good odds for sitting Independent MEP Luke 'Ming' Flanagan, who is likely to get back in on this first count.
Fine Gael incumbent Maria Walsh also looks to be performing comfortably in the first count so far.
It may be some time though before we see all of the candidates elected, as there are roughly 700,000 ballot papers to be counted here.
The sheer size of the ballot papers themselves, listing a colossal 27 candidates, also has an impact on how long this count will take, with some count staff struggling to carry the sizable ballot sheets.
Fianna Fáil TD for Laois-Offaly Barry Cowen looks to be a strong contender for the third seat, but multiple contenders all look in with a chance for those last two seats.
The final counts look set to be be a hotly-contested contest between Fianna Fáil's Lisa Chambers, Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín, Nina Carberry of Fine Gael and Sinn Féin's Chris MacManus, who all still look to be in contention for the final two MEP seats.
