People First Credit Union has confirmed that works to the front of the building of their Laois headquarters in Portlaoise is near completion.

The Kildare / Laois credit union also has branches in Athy, Abbeyleix and Stradbally.

Scaffolding erected earlier this year has been removed recently to reveal a new stone facade to the front of the building that's located just off James Fintan Lalor Avenue.

Members were told in January this year that the work was necessary because, in late 2022, it was discovered that there was a structural issue with the stone cladding on the front of the building. To protect members and the public scaffolding was put in place.

Credit union members were also told in 2024 that the process of reviewing and documenting the cladding defects was completed in 2023 when a remediation plan was drawn up. The work commenced early 2023.

Seán Dunne, CEO, People First Credit Union, provided an update in a statement issued to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

“Following essential repair works we are delighted to present a refreshed and enhanced exterior to our members," he said.

He continued: "The restoration of our branch's exterior was a collaborative effort, and we are proud to have partnered with two esteemed local companies throughout this project. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

"AOCA Engineering expertly oversaw the entire renovation process, ensuring that all works were executed to the highest standards. Additionally, we extend our thanks to Portlaoise Stone Centre for undertaking the project and providing the exceptional stone that adds a distinctive and elegant touch to our building's façade.

"We are extremely pleased with the finished look of our renovated exterior. Our goal was to create a welcoming and modern environment for our members, and we believe we have achieved that.

"We are excited to reach completion with the upcoming installation of our new signage and fresh greenery to the front of the building, which will further enhance the overall aesthetic," he said.

The CEO thanked People First CU members.

"We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our members for their patience and understanding during the renovation period. We recognise the inconvenience that took place and appreciate your support as we worked to improve our facilities. We hope that our members are as proud of the facelift their credit union has received as we are.

"While the renovation works could have been completed faster, we made a deliberate decision to keep our doors open and maintain face-to-face services for our members throughout the process. Your continuous access to our services was our top priority, and we are pleased to have achieved this while enhancing our branch's exterior," he said.

The cost of the work was not revealed. Mr Dunne gave notice of the work in the PFCU annual report for 2023.

The Kildare Laois credit union also has branches in Athy, Abbeyleix and Stradbally.
