A Kildare county councillor has criticised national reps for what he referred to as 'broken promises' in relation to the planned Dublin Commuter Zone.

Social Democrats Cllr Chris Pender expressed deep frustration and disappointment at the latest delay announced by Transport for Ireland (TFI) regarding the implementation of the new zonal structure.

Originally scheduled for an earlier launch, the introduction of this system is now pushed back to the first quarter of 2025 due to the 'significant technical nature of the changes proposed.'

Commenting on the subject, Cllr Pender said: "The recent announcement by the National Transport Authority (NTA) about including Newbridge and Kildare town in the new Dublin Commuter Zone was initially welcomed.

"However, the subsequent delay signifies yet another setback for our community."

He continued:"While we understand the complexities involved in overhauling the zonal structure, it is simply unacceptable for our residents to bear the brunt of these repeated delays.

"Reliable and efficient public transport is crucial for sustainable growth and improving the quality of life in Kildare.

"Our community deserves better, and it is disappointing to see such lack of urgency from TFI."

Cllr Pender further said: "The new fare strategy, set to replace the short hop zone, promised substantial fare reductions: up to 45 per cent for Newbridge commuters and 37 per cent for those from Kildare town.

"Despite years of advocacy and public declarations by our national representatives, the delay to Quarter 1 of 2025 highlights a significant failure in delivering timely results for our constituents."

He also took aim at two other local politicians in his statement: "Minister Martin Heydon and Senator Fiona O'Loughlin have both been vocal supporters of these changes, yet the continued delays show a clear failure to deliver on their promises.

"It’s easy to celebrate announcements, but the real test is in delivering those promises on time. Our residents have been waiting far too long for these fare reductions and the improved transport equity they bring."

Cllr Pender said that he urges both TFI and national representatives to 'prioritise transparency and communication, ensuring all stakeholders are kept informed of progress and any potential further delays.'

He added:"I remain committed to advocating for the timely and effective delivery of public transport improvements, and will continue to push TFI to ensure that the needs of our community are met without further setbacks."

"It’s time for our national representatives to step up and ensure that these delays are addressed immediately," Cllr Pender concluded.
