Sallins residents demonstrated outside Aras Chill Dara in 2016
A community group has been formed in a bid to speed up the development of amenity lands in Sallins, a town with a population well in excess of 6,000.
The need for amenities in the town has been apparent for some time and eight years ago the community presented Kildare County Council with over 2,000 submissions demanding a park.
Eventually, some 42 acres of land was bought in December 2016 - but has since been left undeveloped.
The Sallins Park Action Group wants to enlist the help of the community again - to exert pressure on Kildare County Council and other public bodies to actually start work.
In September 2023 group members met with KCC officials and were told that the community park project would go ahead in two stages.
The first will include playing pitches, wetland areas, car park, a perimeter path and entrances. Phase two will see other elements including a skate park, playground, pathways, allotments and an astro pitch.
However there are a number of tender processes.
The first phase has begun but the second, which is the actual construction work, won't get underway until the council has the money it needs, according to Fergus Carpember of SPAG.
Neither of the first two phases includes dressing rooms, toilets or a community building.
Mr Carpenter said the project will require significant local authority and central government funding.
He said due to pressure exerted by the group KCC has earmarked €1.5m million in the 2024-26 capital programme 2024-26.
However, the initial phase will cost €5m with the second phase consuming €4m.
SPAG, which includes a host of local organisations and clubs (eleven in all), have said this piecemeal approach is not acceptable and because the public finances are in a healthy state, central government must come up with the funding.
The group has met with councillors, Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister of State Thomas Byrne.
“We will be seeking meetings with other relevant government ministers and we will continue to lobby any public representative or official that might be able to help us in our objective of obtaining significant grant aid for the park,” said Mr Carpenter.
The group also pledged to keep the community informed of developments and information can be sought by emailing sallinscommunitypark@gmail.com.
