The Kildare and West-Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KWWSPCA) faces relocation after its landlord has announced the sale of its premises.

As a result of this sale, the KWWSPCA must leave its current premises by February next year.

Explaining the situation, the organisation said: "The Kildare and West Wicklow SPCA has been operating our animal shelter for dogs and cats in Athgarvan for the last ten years.

"We have been renting and the owner has informed us of his intention to sell the land, so we must leave by next February.

"Our landlord has always been extremely kind to us over the years and he has been a great supporter."

PLANNING APPLICATION

The KWWSPCA continued: "We will be lodging our planning application next week with Kildare County Council to build a new facility on land that we purchased outside Kildare town.

"This process will take time and we must wait to see if we are granted permission.

"In the meantime, we are looking for a temporary arrangement: we are appealing to any Kildare landowners who may have stables or farm buildings on a few acres that they are not using which we could lease for a year to eighteen months.

"We would be quiet tenants with members of the public only visiting for a few hours on a Saturday."

"On average, we would have fifteen dogs per day in our care," the KWWSPCA concluded.

'WE REALLY NEED TO CONTINUE OUR WORK'

When asked by the Leinster Leader about the announcement, Chairperson John Kane replied: "We provide a very important service in Kildare and West-Wicklow looking after neglected and abandoned dogs and cats.

"We really need to continue our work by moving into a new temporary location with minimal impact on the welfare of our animals."

He concluded: "We are hoping we can find a solution and that somebody contacts us."

In addition, the KWWSPCA is set to host its 'Noah's Ark Facebook Auction' today.

The auction will feature donated items to raise funds for animal care.
