Overgrown road verges are creating a safety risk

Landowners responsible for overgrown hedges

Kildare County Council has been asked to cut back vegetation on road verges, especially those on the outskirts of towns and villages.

Mayor Fintan Brett pointed out at a Naas Municipal District meeting that these roads are used by walkers.

But “the growth of briars and nettles onto the roadway make it impossible for walkers to step in off the road when meeting traffic.”

He also said there are many areas where road signs cannot be seen.

Kildare County Council said it maintains the road verges at junctions and key locations to maintain sightlines. 

But “due to the significant length of roads in the district and the limited resources available, it is not possible to maintain all verges in the district.”
