Kildare County Council has retrofitted nearly 190 homes

It's a slow and expensive process

Some 186 houses have been retrofitted across County Kildare by the county council providing new insulation and energy upgrade works.

According to Kildare County Council, this was done between 2021 and the end of last year.

The work has been undertaken or planned in council homes in Naas (Lacken View and Cill Corbain), Athy (Ballyroe), Leixlip (Loughnamona), Clane (Ottomy), Newbridge (Lakeside Park and Lakelands) as well as Maynooth, Kilcock, Calverstown, Ballymore Eustace and Celbridge.

It’s planned to do the work on 69 homes this year. It will cost about €7.7m.

Additionally, some 120 homes in Rathangan, Carbury, Kildare town, Monasterevin and Athy had their energy rating (BER) improved.

KCC also says it is encouraging participation in the programme by collecting data from consumption meters, which measure the electricity used solely from the air to water system, in a property.

Meters are now installed in all properties retrofitted under the programme to provide information  about the daily cost of this system in a dwelling and “we can relay this to the tenant in properties where electricity costs are running high and help them to identify sources of other high running cost items in their household.”

Cllr Angela Feeney told a KCC meeting that retrofitting is a key component of climate action.

She said it is important that the council undertake the work in cases where “people cannot afford to do it.”

The money being spent by KCC comes from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

In tandem with the roll out data is being collected from consumption meters, which measure the electricity used solely from the air to water system, in a property.

The maximum grant available per property ranges from €42,350 for mid-terrace and apartment-type properties (one to four storeys) to €48,850 for end-of-terrace, bungalow, detached, and semi-detached properties. Most KCC houses are two and three bedroom houses.

The average cost of property upgrades cannot exceed the total average funding av per property of €34,000, which has been increased from €27,000 at the outset of the programme.
