€100,000 in funding to improve walking tracks in Kildare

Minister Martin Heydon, TD for Kildare South has welcomed the announcement that €100,000 in funding is to be allocated to 3 clubs in Kildare to improve the accessibility of existing community walking track facilities.

Speaking following the announcement Minister Heydon said this funding will play a major part in creating safe and inclusive spaces for people of all ages in these communities.

“I’m delighted to see this announcement for the successful clubs in Kildare, namely Athy RFC and Newbridge Town FC who will both receive €25,000 and Naas RFC who will receive €50,000, under the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and Football Association of Ireland (FAI) Healthy Ireland Walking Tracks initiative, as announced by my colleague Minister Colm Burke.

“By supporting these clubs to provide safe and accessible facilities for all, we are making it easier for people to get out and exercise, and to connect with others in their community.

“This funding will promote increased physical activity among all ages by supporting clubs to upgrade their walking tracks which will improve accessibility for people with mobility issues, such as older persons and wheelchair users.

“There are a range of improvements that can come with this money, such as the upgrading or the installation of lighting designed to prolong the hours of usage particularly during the dark winter evenings.

“In Kildare, we are lucky to have such committed community organisations. I’m delighted to see this funding given to the three clubs, Athy RFC, Newbridge Town FC and Naas RFC, which will support them to maintain and upgrade their walking track.

“The provision of walking tracks is particularly important in rural areas where safe, well-lit walking routes may be limited, particularly in the winter months.

Concluding, Minister Heydon said “I’d like to commend the three clubs and their committees on today’s announcement, a well deserved reward for their hard work and commitment to the club and their surrounding communities.”
