A Kildare-based Senator has raised safety concerns in relation to the St Conleth's Roman Catholic Church area in Newbridge.

Fianna Fáil Senator Fiona O'Loughlin has said that a better management plan is needed for rush hour traffic around the region.

She elaborated: "Over the last few weeks I have been fielding queries in relation to the traffic, congestion and safety issues at the junction between Chapel Lane and the Naas Road in Newbridge."

"This is a hugely busy spot at rush hour, with significant traffic movements between the church, the schools and the ordinary bridge traffic.

"A number of people have raised safety concerns, especially in relation to school kids moving to and from the school.

"The existing automated pedestrian lights have made a difference, but I believe with the level of traffic movements in the area, that a traffic warden would be warranted.

"In terms of Chapel Lane, I also think that Kildare County Council should investigate traffic calming solutions for this stretch of road, to slow traffic and potentially improve the safety of this road at rush hour."

Senator O'Loughlin concluded: "I also believe that the proposed foot bridge which forms part of the Newbridge area plan, which would help facilitate foot traffic from the Patrician Secondary School would also be helpful."
