Naas Lions Club launched the ‘Message in a Bottle’ campaign on Tuesday January 14, at Naas Garda Station, with An Garda Síochána delighted to be on board with this great initiative.

Emergency services members together with local community groups gathered with members of Naas Lions for the launch including Civil Defence, Order of Malta, National Ambulance Service & Fire Service, Alone, Naas General Hospital, Naas Men's Shed, Naas Care of the Aged, Sallins Sunshine Club.

This is an initiative that the Lions club are hoping to roll out in the Naas District and then to be further rolled out within the Division, with the intent to roll it out on a national level.

The aim of the initiative is to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details in a common place (mainly the top shelf of the fridge) where it can be easily found in an emergency

It is intended to help emergency services save valuable time identifying someone in difficulty and will quickly provide their emergency contacts.

The 'message in a bottle' is a simple form that consists of all personal details and medical details for a person. This form is to be filled out and then popped into the bottle. The form will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. This bottle is then kept in the fridge so emergency services will know exactly where it is in the event of an emergency.

The bottle will have two labels. One is fixed on the inside of the front door of the house and the other on the door of the fridge, so it can be easily accessed by emergency services.

The bottle will cost €1, a small cost to pay which could help save someone’s life and the main target audience is for vulnerable people living on their own, elderly and people who have medical conditions.

However, the initiative is open and inclusive of anyone who wants to adopt into their homes.
