Kildare residents have to go to Dublin to recycle their waste

There's been a refusal to open a recycling centre in the north of the county

Some residents living in Kildare have to go to Dublin to access a recycling centre.

This, said Cllr Declan Ryan, is because there is no recycling venue to serve the heavily populated north Kildare region.

He asked if Kildare County Council has any plans to provide a recycling centre in the area, at a Celbridge Leixlip Municipal District meeting.

He pointed out there is a facility in Kilcullen and another in Athy “but nothing in north Kildare.”

This means, he said, people have to go to a centre in Ballymount and deal with traffic congestion on the M50.

Cllr Rupert Heather backed the call adding there is a considerable amount of recyclable material generated locally.

But KCC official Marian Higgins said this was discussed with councillors in March 2025 “in the context of funding and other projects (and councillors were told) the project will not be progressing.”
