BREAKING: Gardaí investigate death of man in 70s whose van entered water

Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances following a fatal road incident that occurred on Sunday evening (November 20).

A van entered the water at approximately 5.30pm at Banagher Marina in Co Offaly.

Emergency services arrived to scene shortly after and treated the driver of the van, a man in his 70s, at the scene.

The man was taken to Ballinasloe Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
 
There were no other persons in the vehicle and the scene is currently preserved to allow for a technical examination to be carried out.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward. 

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage, and who were travelling in the area are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

Offaly Search and Recovery also attended the scene and in a post on Facebook stated:

"Offaly Search and Recovery were contacted directly by the Gardai this evening. Our team members responded quickly and assisted in the recovery at the slip in Banagher. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased and the family."
