The family of gardaí who were called to a domestic incident in Kildare had their family threatened.
Naas District Court was told on Thursday, November 17, that the man, who pleaded guilty to the offences, broke a window in his family home.
When gardaí were called to the home by a relative, the man became irate with them; it was heard that the man verbally abused gardaí and threatened to harm them, as well as their family members. Gardaí also told Judge Desmond Zaidan that they believed that the defendant had 'been coming down' off of drugs and/or alcohol.
The man’s solicitor said that his client was apologetic over what happened, which a garda present in the courthouse corroborated.
He also said that his client suffers from both physical and mental illnesses.
In response to the details, Judge Zaidan said that it was 'very cowardly' of the man to verbally abuse gardaí and threaten their families.
Judge Desmond Zaidan decided to remand the man in custody for a week, and said that at the next hearing, he would like the relative of the man to appear to tell him her version of the incident.
He also directed medical attention for the defendant while he is in custody.
