The beloved Christmas lights for Newbridge will be switched on on Thursday, December 1, the Leinster Leader has been told.
There had been unfounded speculation on social media that the traditional festive display in the town would be dramatically scaled down.
However Joe Kelly, Chairperson of the Newbridge Christmas Lights Committee, Kildare County Council will begin putting up the lights from today.
The announcement was corroborated by fellow committee member, Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender.
Mr Kelly said that the committee had carefully considered its decision in relation to the lights, due to the current energy crisis.
He explained that lights will be placed on trees in the Main Street of the town, and also at the entrance of the Liffey Linear Park.
However, Mr Kelly added that lights will not be put up on the bridge or in any side-street lanes.
Mr Kelly reassured the public that despite the cutbacks, the committee 'will be doing the best they can' to make to the display attractive to the town's residents.
In addition, the crib depicting the birth of Jesus Christ will also be put up on the Main Street.
