Kildare supermarket is being blamed for congestion on town's main street

Naas

Traffic going into and leaving the Dunne Stores supermarket is causing congestion in Naas town centre.

Cllr Seamie Moore told a Naas Municipal District meeting that a new traffic system should be introduced to deal with the problem.

He said all vehicles leaving the store should turn left and travel down Sallins Road.

He said this traffic should then turn right onto Wolfe Tone Street and be permitted to run right again at the end of this route.

This would mean that people could drive back into the town centre.

As it is, traffic exiting Wolfe tone Street on to Dublin Road is compelled to turn left only.

“A circuit arrangement should be observed because they’re banjaxing everything else,” said Cllr Moore.

He pointed out that the current delays are exacerbated because the yellow junction box at the entrance to the store only takes up half the street - forcing drivers to wait for a break in traffic movement on the other side of the street.

Cllr Colm Kenny agreed saying that the right turn for people driving out should be done away with.
