Naas-based Brendan’s Running Club is celebrating its 10th birthday.
Founded by Naas man Brendan Loughlin, who has 23 years experience in the fitness industry, it’s safe to say it has changed the lives of many people and in many ways.
Brendan’s guiding philosophy is that running is for everyone and that with the right guidance and encouragement there are no boundaries to what can be achieved.
“It started out on a cold Monday evening back in February 2012 with the first couch to 5km programme and at the time I didn't fully grasp the journey that I was embarking on. I wanted to start a running club but it evolved into a running community,” Brendan recalled.
Over the years hundreds of people from all walks of life and all age groups have become members and everyone is welcomed into the club, treated with respect and dignity and is encouraged and supported by everyone.
The group has also raised money for charities. “I have organised the Naas town 10 km and 5km family fun runs in aid of the Jack and Jill foundation for the last nine years. This brings up to 800 people running on the streets of Naas and to date some €43200 has been raised and we’re looking forward to our 10tth anniversary event next year.
The club has undertaken a 48 hour non stop relay of loops of Naas town and raised a whopping €7,600 for Hope D charity.
The club’s third annual Naas 10 mile run raises funds for Naas GAA and will take place in March 2023.
They’ve also staged fundraisers for Mainstreet Foodbank, Friends of Naas Hospital , the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Pieta House.
The club runs through all manner of weather conditions and Brendan says its success is down to “our friendly attitude, and our ability to treat everyone as an individual with no comparisons.”
There are to suit all levels of runners and a flexible timetable to accommodate as many people as possible.
“We have brought many runners from couch to 5km, to 10km and lots have achieved their first half marathon with us and we have a programme aimed at participating in the Dublin City Marathon, which has seen many runners take part in it.
