Kildare County Council have said that the reason for the delay in providing a swimming pool for Maynooth is down to the fact that a site which represents value for money has not been found yet.

The construction of a new pool for the town has long been mooted, but as of yet there has been no developments in the proposed project. Cllr Tim Durkan asked the latest meeting of the Maynooth Municipal District for an update on the swimming pool, and the council highlighted a key factor that is holding up the process.

"One of the options being pursued by the Kildare County Council Management Team is the possibility of a joint venture with Maynooth University," read a statement from the council.

"Discussions have taken place on a number of occasions between senior management in both organisations and options continue to be explored.

"A key issue in these discussions is the fact that Kildare County Council must have ownership of the selected site in order to qualify for capital funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport."
