Kilcullen to be turned into a Winter Wonderland with lights to be switched on tomorrow
16:40 Friday 7th of December 2018

Market Square in Kilcullen will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland during the Christmas market taking place on Saturday, 8 December.

On the day there will be plenty of performances, stalls and a visit from Santa Claus himself. Santa’s Grotto will be in the Heritage Centre from 12 noon to 5pm with the chance for children to have a chat and get their photograph taken.

“We’ll have over 25 local stall holders,” said Antoinette Buckley who along with various committee members of Kilcullen Community Action and other business interests was out dressing the bridge recently to create the first of the seasonal Christmas street lighting.

Other decorations put up around the bridge include painted bicycles with festive lights and seasonal floristry.

There will be 25 stalls at the Christmas market lined with hot food, mince pies, Christmas cakes, crafts, gifts, fresh Christmas trees, florists, breads, jewellery and face painting

The Patrician School Brass and Pipe Band will parade through Kilcullen to the Christmas Market from 12 noon on Saturday.

The 50-strong group of musicians will assemble at the Mart Car Park from 11.30am and will then march with Santa to the square and the band will play for some 10 minutes before marching back up through the town. Santa will be available to meet children in his grotto in the Heritage Centre from 12.30pm.

The visit is free, and a photo with Santa is available for €10. A free performance of 'Elf' by the Drama Dynamics School of Speech and Drama will be held on three occasions in the Town Hall at 12.30pm, 2pm and 3.30pm while DJ Georgia will be spinning festive tunes.

Kilcullen Gospel Choir will give a special performance from 4pm-5pm before the Christmas lights will be switched on by Kilcullen Community Action for 5pm.

Meanwhile, next year will mark 700 years since the construction of Kilcullen bridge and there will be a New Year's Eve Ball hosted in Fallons of Kilcullen.

Profits made on the New Year Ball will help to fund events throughout the year.
