ACCUSED

A male juvenile allegedly involved in a cross-county car chase appeared before Judge Desmond Zaidan at Naas District Court on Thursday, September 28.

The teenage boy was allegedly involved in the incident as a passenger, along with one adult (the driver of the vehicle) and another juvenile (another passenger).

However, these two defendants were not present in court on the date in question.

The male juvenile was accompanied by his grandfather and stepfather during the court session.

Garda Sergeant Brian Jacob told the court that gardaí saw a car speeding on a road at night-time in County Kildare, and that the car failed to stop when the gardaí indicated for the driver to do so.

It was also heard that the car was 'driving against the flow of traffic.'

Sgt Jacob added that 'a long pursuit' took place, and that it carried over into at least two different counties.

He further said that the chase came to an end when gardaí managed to seal off a part of the road that the defendants were travelling on.

Judge Zaidan refused jurisdiction over the case; he explained that, in his view, 'these are not minor allegations.'

He adjourned the case to November 2 to allow time for a book of evidence to be presented against the juvenile, and also for the Director of Public Prosecutions to consider his judgement over refusing jurisdiction in the case.
