Kildare Gardai have advised householders to be wary of suspicious callers to their door - as they may be 'casing' out the property to see if anybody is home.
A Kildare Garda spokesperson said: "We have seen that in some recent burglaries, it is believed that the culprits called to the house first, purportedly selling items - but in reality they were checking to see if anyone was home."
"Please report any suspicious callers immediately to your local station and look out for your neighbours if their house is empty during the day."
Some people unwittingly employ door-to-door traders and repair people to carry carry out work.
However very little work is carried out and the householder is charged large amounts of money.
Gardai said there are specific criminal offences for this type of behaviour such as:
- criminal damage;
- demanding money with menace.
All offences are dealt with under existing criminal legislation and offenders, when caught, can be successfully prosecuted before the criminal courts.
