The second ever jockeys and trainers Masterchef style cooking challenge launched the 46th Kildare Derby Festival which culminates in the running of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby on the last weekend in June.
A large crowd watched the fun open air event in Kildare Town’s square this week to launch this year’s Kildare Derby Festival which had a guest appearance from Dancing With The Stars star judge Brian Redmond.
The fun event involved top jockeys Shane Foley, Billy Lee and Chris Hayes who judged the cooking skills of well known trainers Johnny Murtagh, Eddie and Patrick Harty, Padraig Roche and Ross O’Sullivan who all represented local restaurants in Kildare Town such as Silken Thomas, Cunninghams, O’Dooles, Hartes and the Gallops.
The big surprise of the night was the fact that rank outsider Padraig Roche won the overall event in a final ‘cook off’ with Ross O’Sullivan, a result that was the equivalent of a 500/1 outsider according to MC Kevin O’Ryan.
