A 77 year old man was jokingly told by a judge that he is "doing a lot better than Manchester United.”

Judge Desmond Zaidan noted that he had been “keeping a clean sheet” for all of his life before he was prosecuted at Naas District Court.

The Newbridge man, who appeared in court, was charged with driving with excess alcohol on December 29, 2023, at Great Connell, Newbridge.

Sgt Mary Meade told the court he had been detained earlier that day following a road traffic collision and he was dealt with by way of the issuing of a fixed charge notice.

The sergeant added that he was advised not to drive.

But 17 minutes later he was observed driving again and a subsequent blood sample returned a reading of 60.

“He waits until he is 77 to misbehave,” commented Judge Zaidan.

Replying to the judge, solicitor Matt Byrne said the man is behaving himself and he added he was accompanied to court by his wife.

Judge Zaidan, a Liverpool supporter, said he was obliged to impose a six months driving disqualification. He said he would not impose any fine.
