Tributes have been paid across Kildare to Des Marron who passed away on Monday aged 91.

Clane resident Mr Marron was a goalkeeper in the Kildare team that won the Leinster Final in 1956.

He founded Marron’s Pharmacy in Clane and was a pillar of the local community, earning the title of 'lord mayor' of the town.

He was also a founding member of Clane Musical Society.

South Kildare TD Martin Heydon said: "Des made a lasting contribution to Clane and its wider community for which he will be forever remembered. May he now rest in peace."

Paula Lalor said: "Des was a larger than life character - a central pillar of the community in Clane. He welcomed my parents when they moved to live in Clane in their latter years and they thought very highly of him."

Christy and Mary Morrin added: "Des was a colossus in Clane, a wonderful community person and a much loved man. We will never see his like again. Rest in Peace Dessie."
Niall McCorley, Munich said: "Dessie was a true gentleman and I’ll always remember the great stories he used to tell when I was a young lad growing up in Clane. You gave so much to the village and will be sorely missed."
Mr Marron passed away peacefully at Tallaght Hospital, in his 92nd year.

He was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen and father-in-law of the late Brian.

He is deeply regretted by his loving children Fiona, Máire, Victor, John, Kevin, Cecily and Edel, sons-in-law Eamon and Russell, daughters-in-law Bernie and Gillian, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, loyal staff and customers and a large circle of friends.
