€4 Million in funding has been secured for the delivery of the Grand Canal Greenway from Sallins to Offaly Border.

€67 million in funding will be allocated for Greenways and National Roads Active Travel in 2025. This allocation is dedicated to developing walking and cycling facilities that offer safe, sustainable, and healthier transportation options to communities.

The allocation of €67 million for the Greenways programme throughout the country is in addition to approximately €293 million allocated to fund the Active Travel programme, announced by the NTA in January 2025.

Over €11M in funding has been allocated for Kildare Road restoration improvements. Funding has also been secured for works on eight bridge rehabilitation projects as well funding for numerous safety improvement projects on our counties regional and rural roads.

Kildare North Fianna Fáil Minister James Lawless TD said, “The commitment of €4 million to continue the Grand Canal Greenway from Sallins to Clonkeen, in Offaly is great news. I believe that it will further enhance the village and wider area and provide a wonderful amenity to locals and tourists alike. I also believe that the entire area will enjoy an uplift both economically and recreationally as the Greenway will improve the overall fabric of the surrounding areas.

“This is a very positive news for Kildare and working with Kildare County Council we will see these important Greenway projects being delivered.”
