A Fine Gael councillor has called for missing and new road signage to be installed in Kilcullen, Co Kildare, to help alleviate traffic congestion.

Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, who raised her motion at a recent Kildare-Newbridge municipal district meeting, said the issue was brought to her by a regular jogger and cyclist in Kilcullen who was familiar with the area.

Cllr O'Dwyer said that when an accident occurs on the motorway, all the traffic is directed towards Kilcullen, causing severe disruption and congestion.

Kilcullen, she said, is a busy town and suffers congestion at peak times already, and there were other roads that people could use if they knew where the signs were.

There was "only so much” that could be done in Kilcullen to alleviate the traffic until there was a relief road or link road, she said, adding that signage was probably the “easiest and quickest” solution to the problem.

Cllr O'Dwyer called for signage in Kilcullen to include:

  1. A 'Naas right' and 'Carlow left' regional direction sign on the R448 at the Logstown Junction.

  2. A direction sign on the R448 on the approach to the Logstown junction from Naas to indicate the left turn goes to Ballymore/Dunlavin.

  3. An advance direction sign on the R448 Naas approach road into Kilcullen.

Following Cllr O'Dwyer's representation, the Municipal District office agreed to review the locations in question and to revert to Cllr O'Dwyer.

The Municipal District engineer will replace missing signage and, subject to budget, install additional signage if required.
