New car park set to open for Kildare motorists

The possibility of opening the car park at Kildare County Council’s Aras Chill Dara HQ is being explored.

KCC says that the opening of the car park at weekends and “potentially over a longer period on weekdays” is under assessment and an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal has finished.

However, further assessment is required “in particular related to security, CCTV provision and practical operational elements.”

Cllr Evie Sammon was told at a Naas Municipal District meeting that a final report is expected by mid-May.

The possibility of this happening first emerged over a year ago when KCC official Eoghan Ryan said issues such as opening hours and security need to be addressed first but the request to open it is “being actively explored.”

Cllr Sammon made the initial request describing it as “a huge car park sitting empty every weekend” and she said it would be used by people unwilling to drive into Naas.

She suggested that it should be possible for people to walk through a gate from the front to access the car park rather than having to walk around the building.

Cllr Sammon said the KCC car park is a seven minute walk to the town centre library and “we need to utilise every bit of parking.”
