Members of the public in County Kildare are being invited by Kildare County Council (KCC) to sign up to a free major alerts service called MapAlerter.ie.
The service has partnered up with KCC to provide targeted messages to subscribers, which can be received via email and / or text message.
Subscribers to this service can log onto the website or the app and choose to receive an update, such as, weather warnings for the county, road closures planned in their area, or new planning applications submitted or decided in their locality.
Welcoming the initiative, the Cathaoirleach of County Kildare, Fine Gael Cllr Kevin Duffy, said: "Communicating with our communities in a prompt way is vital."
He added: "While updates on our website and on social media are effective to a degree, this service ensures that a message lands directly to a mobile phone at the time when its needed and contributes to getting updates directly to the people of the county, related to the areas where they live”.
The Chief Executive of KCC, Sonya Kavanagh, also expressed optimism for the service — she said: "The service has the capacity to complement existing communications through the media and social media."
