March 10th marked the 18th anniversary of the passing of popular teenager Jamie Donohoe from Newbridge.

Hailing from Roseberry, the teen, who was known to all who knew him as “Smiley”, died tragically at the age of 16. Jamie’s family organised a golf memorial on his first anniversary. Run at Newbridge Golf Club, this event has become a key golfing date for its regular supporters throughout the years.

The June Bank Holiday Weekend (May 31) will see the 18th Annual Jamie “Smiley” Donohoe Golf Classic played once again in Newbridge Golf Club.

This year all funds raised will go to the Kildare Down Syndrome Association. Founded in 1985, the branch has over 200 members and supports families with a son or daughter with Down Syndrome. At present the branch provides early development group, speech therapy, drama, dance and pottery in various premises throughout County Kildare, as well as a horticultural centre in Sallins.

The branch is run on a voluntary basis by a committee of ten. All services provided by the branch are funded through donations, grant and fund-raising events. Their mission is working towards an improved quality on life for their members and of people with Down Syndrome as a valued member in society.

For the golf classic, a team of four will cost €200, which includes lunch. Tee sponsors are €50. People interested in supporting this year’s event can contact Paul on 086-0472543 or the PM Jamie “smiley” Donohoe Golf Classic Facebook page.

Jamie’s parents Paul and Maria and his sisters Ciara and Hayley would like to thank everyone that has supported this event over the years and they look forward to seeing everyone again on May 31.
