US Senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will visit County Kildare this weekend.
The announcement was made by Cathaoirleach / Mayor of the Athy Municipal District (MD), Labour Party councillor Aoife Breslin.
Specifically, Mayor Breslin made the announcement at the very end of the latest Athy MD meeting, which took place on Monday, May 19 last.
She told those in attendance that the Vermont-based independent politician, alongside his wife, Dr Jane O’Meara Sanders, will visit Athy on the afternoon of Sunday, May 25 in order to unveil a plaque commemorating the song 'Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye'.
In addition, she said that tickets will soon be available for the event through Eventbrite.
After the meeting, Mayor Breslin told the Leinster Leader that further details about the visit will follow soon.
Sanders previously attempted to secure the Democratic presidential nominations in 2016 and 2020.
When he dropped out of the 2020 race, this paved the way for Joe Biden to secure the Democratic nomination.
