“Similar to last year, it was disappointing to go out of the Leinster Championship, but the lads again knuckled down and regrouped. It is brilliant to have this competition because this is a very difficult age group. It is hard at 16 years old to keep players happy, get game time into them, develop them, and overcome those losses. If that had been it for our lads last year and this year, it would have a huge hit to their development,” said Kildare minor manager Niall Cronin after his side’s Paul McGirr Cup final win over Meath.
“I am happy they are getting the rewards that they deserve out of this year. They have worked very hard, we have had over 100 training sessions going back to November when there were 168 lads to whittle down to 32. Hopefully this will be a springboard for them going forward.”
The Kildare Minor manager also clearly indicated that he would be stepping away from his post following a four-year stint in charge. He said: “I think having seen 120 Minors is enough now. I want to see Kildare GAA back playing competitively in Croke Park. If I can help on the training ground, or whatever the case may be, if I think I can help Kildare GAA I’ll do that.
“It’s been an enjoyable four years, a tough four years, with this one being the toughest if I am being honest, but if I can help Kildare GAA, I'll do it and hopefully we can get back to the days that we all remember, that seem like a long time ago now.”
