A motorist refused to give a breath specimen to gardaí when stopped at a Kildare Garda checkpoint over the weekend. 
Naas Roads Policing Unit were operating the Mandatory Intoxicant Checkpoint at Parson Street, Maynooth, Co Kildare. 
Officers stopped a vehicle where the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver was very intoxicated and refused to provide a roadside breath specimen.
The driver was arrested and brought to Leixlip Garda Station, where they remained uncooperative and again refused to provide a breath, blood, or urine sample.
The driver has been charged with three offences and will appear in court soon.
The motorist, if convicted, could face:
  • A 4-year driving disqualification
  • Fine of up to €5,000
  • Up to 6 months in prison
Gardai said: "Never ever drive under the influence of drink or drugs. It’s dangerous. It’s illegal. It’s never worth the risk."
