A Leixlip councillor has called for Kildare County Council to undertake a feasibility study to provide a Park & Ride facility to serve the town.
According to Cllr Nuala Killeen (SD), this would increase the public parking availability in Leixlip, and reduce traffic congestion.
In her motion, tabled at a recent MD meeting, Cllr Killeen said the feasibility study should include an assessment of potential locations to connect and serve the M4 bus corridor “and consider connectivity to all public transport and walking routes into the village.”
Cllr Killeen also requested that this assessment be submitted to the NTA (National Transport Authority) “by the end of the year.”
She said she wished to revisit the idea of a Park & Ride facility for Leixlip, as she “didn't want to let it slip into obscurity.”
Cllr Killeen said she wondered if there was any update since 2020, when the NTA set up a Park and Ride Development Office (PRDO).
She said this was especially pertinent with the DART service coming to Leixlip, and that there needed to be planning now for a Park & Ride facility for it to become operational in a couple of years' time.
An official stated that it is the NTA that is responsible for developing Park & Ride facilities, and the council has met with the NTA on a number of occasions about Park & Ride facilities around the county.
According to the official, the NTA picks the location and then engages with the council around design.
At the moment there is no agreed location along the N4, but the council will continue to work with the NTA to identify locations, she said.
A report issued by the council stated: “The National Transport Authority set up a Park and Ride Development Office (PRDO) in February 2020, following a recommendation from the Climate Action Plan 2019, which included this as one of 28 actions targeting transport related climate change.
“The Purpose of the Park and Ride Development Office is to facilitate the delivery of key Park and Ride sites by the NTA, in collaboration with Local Authorities, Irish Rail and transport agencies in the Greater Dublin Area and regional cities, by providing dedicated specialist resources for these projects.
“Examining sites along the N4 forms part of their strategic remit.”
