There are “no plans” currently to introduce a weight restriction for vehicles on Main Street, Clane, Kildare County Council has confirmed.
The council was responding to a motion tabled by Cllr Daragh Fitzpatrick (FF) at the July meeting of Clane-Maynooth Municipal District, held on Friday, July 4 last.
Cllr Fitzpatrick had motioned: “That the council introduces weight restrictions on vehicles using Main Street in Clane to ensure that HGVs use the new Ring Road around village.”

Referencing the council's report, which stated there were “no resources available in 2025 to carry out this analysis”, Cllr Fitzpatrick asked “how much” would be required for analysis to take place.
Cllr Fitzpatrick told the council that Clane has become “another bottleneck in our MD”, as a result of the Sallins by-pass and population growth.
He believed that taking the HGVs out of the town would be “a huge plus” for pedestrians, and for residents of the village of Clane.
He said that councillors should endeavour to ensure that there is a weight restriction on vehicles using Main Street “as soon as possible.”
Cllr William Durkan (FG), supporting the motion, said that from speaking to the people of Clane, the main thing that comes up on the doors is traffic and traffic management within the town.
There is a serious need for a detailed traffic analysis and a plan, he said, which would assist with infrastructural plans going forward and if the matter was being dealt with at a national level.
Cllr Durkan said that when the new link road comes, it will be the ideal time to conduct a detailed traffic analysis in the town.
Cllr Tim Durkan (FG), said that essentially the problem Clane has is that it is a connecting route between the N7/M7 and the M4 for HGVs, and asked if there were any plans or updates to bypass Alexandra Bridge, which he believed would ease congestion.
A report issued by the council stated: “There are no plans currently to introduce a weight restriction on the Main Street of Clane.
“Traffic analysis and a Traffic Management Plan would be required prior to any decision on weight restrictions could be proposed.
“There are no resources available in 2025 to carry out this analysis.”
