Kildare County Council is to carry out a vehicle speed and volume survey on the road adjacent to St Wolstan's School, Celbridge, following the representations of a local councillor.

Cllr David Trost (FF) – recently elected Leas Cathaoirleach of the Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District – tabled his motion at an MD meeting held on Friday, July 18 2025.

Cllr Trost motioned: “That the council implements a speed check review on the road past St Wolstan's School, Celbridge towards Barberstown Cross, and past the entrance to Killeenlea.”

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Trost said that particularly because this road is so close to St Wolstan's School, it appears to be “a very speedy area”.

There is a lot of traffic on the road, he said, adding it is a dangerous location for schoolchildren.

Cllr Trost suggested it would be well worth carrying out a speed check review at the location, not just for the sake of the school and its young pupils, but also for the sake of the residents of Killeenlea.

The residents there, he pointed out, “have their own issues” with regard to parking on the road and trying to access the estate, and would therefore welcome any interventions by the council.

Also contributing to the motion, Cllr Bernard Caldwell (FF) said that speed restrictions were needed on roads such as this “because it's getting more and more dangerous” for pedestrians.

He knew, he said, it was the policy of the council not to have certain speed restrictions, but until traffic was slowed down, “we'll always have problems.”

Cllr Trost welcomed the fact that the local authority are to act on his motion.

A report issued by the council stated: “The Municipal District Office will carry out a vehicle speed and volume survey at this location following the completion of the ducting works and temporary traffic management at this location associated with the adjacent solar farm development.”
