Environmental group is giving out free battery recycling boxes

The initiative is taking place in Blessington

An environmental group has launched an initiative to give out free battery disposal boxes.

The Blessington Allotments Campaign have partnered with Blessington Tourist Office and WEEE Ireland to provide 200 free battery recycling boxes for west Wicklow.

The small battery boxes are a simple way for residents to collect used batteries, making it easier for them to be safely disposed of through WEEE Ireland’s electrical recycling.

The boxes are available at the tourist office and returned with the batteries at an electrical recycling day on Saturday August 23, 10am - 4pm at McGreal's primary care centre in Blessington.

Used batteries can also be left  into the large battery recycling boxes which are located in many major retailers, such as Aldi or Supervalu in Blessington.

Wicklow County Council recently reported that in 2024,  people living in the county recycled an average of just 7.5kg of e-waste per person, substantially below the national average of 9.5kg.

Chairperson of Blessington Allotments Campaign Dónal McCormack said: “Every electrical item that is recycled means a new life for the materials contained within that device or battery. With this initiative, our campaign continues to work on and support community projects which have a positive impact on our local environment. We are delighted to link this project with our free WEEE Ireland electrical recycling day and to help build and expand on the success of last year’s event.”

He thanked the tourist Office and WEEE Ireland for collaborating with BAC.

Tourist Office Manager Martin Cahill said: “The office is at the centre of community life  in Blessington and we are delighted to be part of another project which helps promote sustainability within west Wicklow. The free battery recycling boxes are a positive solution to battery waste and continue our focus and work on projects which help make it easier for the  community to make more sustainable and environmentally friendly choices.”
