Council blocks €10m expansion for Kildare hotel
Plans to significantly extend Maudlins Hotel in Naas have been turned down by Kildare County Council.
The proposal sought permission for a substantial four-storey extension to the rear of the hotel, including new bedrooms and facilities, with the demolition of existing outbuildings and alterations to parking and landscaping.
The planner raised concerns about the scale, bulk, and design of the extension, concluding that it would represent an overdevelopment of the site.
The hotel can appeal the decision or amend its planning application and re-apply for permission.
The planner's report also stated the new block would dominate the protected structure of Maudlins House, negatively impacting its character and setting.
The planner also highlighted deficiencies in the application, noting that key documentation such as a conservation report and visual impact assessment had not been provided.
In addition, the report raised issues regarding traffic management, parking provision, and the overall layout of the development.
Citing conflict with local planning policies aimed at protecting heritage buildings, the report ultimately recommended refusal of permission.
Maudlins Hotel, located on the Dublin Road, is a long-established venue in Naas, popular for weddings, events, and conferences. The proposed extension was intended to expand its capacity and upgrade its facilities.
