A speed survey is to be carried out on the R407, Co Kildare – between Mainham Cemetery and Clongowes Wood College, Clane – following the representations of a local councillor.

Cllr William Durkan (FG) tabled his motion at a meeting of Clane Maynooth Municipal District on Friday September 5 last.

In his motion, Cllr Durkan called for the council to provide additional traffic calming measures, to include additional signage and road markings at the location.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Durkan said he welcomed the council's report, which stated there will be a site visit at the location, to include a speed survey.

He pointed out that on the approach to the town, which he said is “a little bit outside of the urban area, and within the higher speed limit zone”, there are quite a number of entrances from adjoining roads and private properties, which present a hazard for motorists.

There were also a number of road bends in the area, he pointed out, so that he welcomed the fact that a speed survey was to be carried out by the council.

He asked that the engineer provide details of the survey when the results were available, and what their view is after inspection of the location as well.

Also speaking on the motion, Cllr Padraig McEvoy (Ind) said there was an opportunity for a road safety van or a garda camera van to be located in this area.

He agreed there appeared to be an issue with speeding vehicles in the area, but also with the level of traffic in the area in recent months.

If there were a high number of vehicles travelling at excessive speed, he suggested, then maybe a garda presence would have a positive impact, as it did elsewhere in Kildare in recent years.

Perhaps, he said, this was another chance to give some feedback to the public about breaking speed limits.

A report issued by Kildare County Council stated: “The Municipal District Engineer will arrange for a speed survey to be carried out at this location. The result of this survey will guide any proposal for traffic calming at this location.”
