Works have been completed on Athy Heritage Centre, Emily Square, Athy, Kildare which are set to provide for the Shackleton Museum and exhibition spaces.
According to Construction Information Services (CIS), works on Athy Heritage Centre – under JS Dooley Contracting Ltd – began on November 30 2023.
The works included: the reconfiguration, refurbishment and extension of the existing, protected three-storey building.
A two-storey glass and steel extension to the south of building (by specialist designer and sub-contractor) required partial demolition of the central bay of the existing façade.
The internal re-configuration included the removal of a mezzanine, a lift and two stairways, with the addition of one mezzanine, one lift and two stairways in different locations.

Associated site works included connection to below ground utilities and landscaping.
According to CIS, there were to be concurrent works (outside of this contract) to the adjacent public realm and for the exhibition and museum display fit-out.
It is understood that David Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd. were to carry out works on a concurrent civil works contract.
The estimated cost of the project is €2m.
