The man aged in his 40s was before the court on an allegation of breaching the Public Order Act in a Kildare town.
The court was told that all of the man's family are illiterate and solicitor Seamus Boyle told the court that “things went downhill after the death of the man’s mother.”
Mr Boyle said that some members of the family had been abused by some other people who have been of a stronger mind. He said the family had been described as “being slow.”
Judge Desmond Zaidan advised the man to pursue education or training, adding that many people had done this in their later years and qualified with a trade or became solicitors or accountants, for example.
“It’s never too late to educate yourself to be whatever you want. A lot of people go back to education today," the judge said.
He added that the man's predicament should not be allowed to happen in Ireland in 2025
