Kildare author publishes dark psychological thriller, 'Thy Will Be Done'

Johnstown, Kildare author, Marcus Power freely admits that his latest offering, 'Thy Will Be Done' is a rather heavy going affair.

The novel, billed as a dark, psychological thriller, centres around a young Dublin priest, John, who is set on wreaking revenge on his abusive mother and her lover, a similarly unsavoury priest who preyed on him as a child.

Without disclosing too much, John manages to exact a fitting revenge on the couple, before taking to the streets to vent his anger on others.

As Marcus explains of his protagonist, although abhorrent in his actions, the reader eventually comes to empathise with him, though perhaps not condone his actions.

The root of John's psychological malaise lies in his troubled childhood, dominated by a religious zealot and physically abusive mother, and her lover, a sexually deviant priest.

“I wanted something a bit different to a serial killer story, so I decided, if the serial killer was a priest it would be a little bit different”, John tells Kildare Now this week.

“I wanted to get it across – 'why has he got this hatred in him?', so I said if I could stem it back to his childhood, like in real life where there's a connection between the overbearing, religious mother and then his father wasn't around because he died when he was three in the book.

“Even in real life when you study serial killers, there's that hatred of the mother, and that stems into the women, so when he gets rid of the priest he still has a hatred of women, and he decides that prostitutes are the worst form of women out there, and he starts getting rid of as many of them as he can.”

This isn't Marcus' first novel; around 10 years ago he published 'Addicted', a gangland crime story based in Dublin.

He is actually working on his third novel at the moment, though this has been delayed due to him working on 'Thy Will Be Done.'

“I'm on my third novel now, it's another gangland style thing and it's set in Dublin. I'm on the second draft of that now and it'll be another few drafts before I get it the way I want it, so it'll be the new year anyway.”

'Thy Will Be Done' is available on Amazon and through Marcus' website, www.marcus-power.com
