A councillor has called on Kildare County Council (KCC) to implement tougher restrictions in one Kildare region in order to combat illegal parking, among other issues.

Labour Party Cllr Mark Leigh made the request at the latest Athy Municipal District meeting, which was held on Monday, October 15 last.

While in attendance at this meeting, he motioned for KCC to take action "on the illegal parking, blocking of exits and flow of traffic at Clonmullion, Athy, particularly during school drop-offs and pick-ups".

Cllr Leigh's motion was seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Aoife Breslin.

In response to his motion, KCC told Cllr Leigh that its Transportation Department would request a traffic warden to attend and inspect the location.

Cllr Leigh then proceeded to emphasise his view that more restrictions should be implemented in Clonmullion.

He told KCC: "Anyone who visits there during school times can tell you that there is an issue."

Cllr Leigh also claimed that he was aware of locals who had problems either entering or exiting the area during peak times.

He then appealed to KCC to implement more parking restrictions in Clonmullion, in addition to extra "supervision" of the area and the erection of new signage.

Furthermore, he suggested that KCC could liaise with An Garda Síochána with the view of resolving the issues in this region.

His colleague, Cllr Breslin, also told KCC that she "fully supported" Cllr Leigh's motion.

She went on to say that she was contacted by one resident in Clonmullion who works in the emergency services and who described experiencing "constant" issues relating to traffic in the region.

"It can't continue," Cllr Breslin stressed to KCC.

She also asked KCC if it was aware of a potential provision, which related to one school in the region, to install private parking inside its gates.

In response, a representative of KCC who was present at the meeting said that they would look into this matter for Cllr Breen.
