Gardaí based in South Kildare are investigating an assault incident after a male juvenile was struck in the face by a firework.

The crime was highlighted by Garda Sean O'Mahony when he appeared on a KFM radio programme which aired earlier today (October 29).

He explained to host Hannah Kelly that the incident occurred in Athy on the evening of October 22 last.

According to Gda O'Mahony, the male was "struck on the forehead" by a firework and received "a very serious burn".

He also said that he has been gone into a number of schools recently in order to inform children of the legality and dangers surrounding fireworks.

Gda O'Mahony concluded by urging anyone with information about the assault to contact Athy Garda Station on 059 863 4210.

When asked by the Leinster Leader about this incident, a garda spokesperson responded: "Gardaí received a report of an incident of assault in which a male juvenile received non-life threatening injuries at approximately 6.50pm on Wednesday, October 22 last on the Dublin Road in Athy, County Kildare."

The spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing.
