Works have begun on a convent extension in Maynooth, Co Kildare.

A church and community project is planned for the Divine Word Missionaries on Moyglare Road.

The proposal, submitted by The Society of the Divine Word, involves the construction of a three-storey residential extension to the existing rectory. The new building will include five rectory bedrooms and a foyer space, with connections to existing services and all associated site works.

The project, designed by Joseph Mackey Architects, will add 233 square metres of floor space on the 1.4-hectare site. The design firm, based in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois, and Cork, is also acting as certifier for the development.

Fingleton Ventures Ltd of Cullenagh, Co. Laois, has been named as the main contractor.

The development, valued at just over €700,000, received planning approval on May 7th, 2024, and is scheduled to begin construction on October 17th, 2025.

The extension will enhance accommodation facilities for the Divine Word Missionaries community at Moyglare Road, who have been part of Maynooth’s religious and educational life for many years.
